Saturday morning I woke up to "Heavy Metal," by Sammy Hagar, which James performed on movie nite. I just love that performance. James gives it everything he has. I think he knew he had to go the extra mile to sell it, since Jimmy Iovine didn't approve of his choice, and he figured the mainstream Idol audience might be resistent to a heavy hitting song.
He came out of the gate with guns blazing, calling out, "America, get out your seats!" and then introduced the great metal axman Zack Wylde, who joined him onstage. It was James' idea to have Zack on the show. It was also James' idea to climb up on the judges' table during the song. He hit some killer high notes, and the audience (and Randy) roared their approval at the end. James made sure that Zack got plenty of recognition, then he made Jennifer wait to start her critique so he could run over and give a little boy who was standing at the edge of the stage a high-five. "That song was for Cole," he announced. He tweeted later that Cole was at the show courtesy of the Make a Wish Foundation.
